Robust Bioland quality:

There are no more excuses: I don’t have a garden or balcony. Window sills are also great for gardening! There are systems where the wall and windowsill do not need to be drilled.

MASU flower box holder

I work with the MASU from Green Creations. This is made of high-quality plastic (recycled plastic(glass fibre reinforced, with UV stabilizers, weather-resistant), but beautifully playful and offers various playful, interchangeable decorative elements. It fits on any windowsill from 78 cm to 140 cm. Drilling is not required. Only the insect nesting aids are not recommended due to unclean drill holes. The manufacturer makes every effort to find a producer who ensures that the wild bees do not injure their wings.

Flower box holder without drilling

This very high-quality model made of Stainless steel from Tietz Metalldesign Passau I like even better. They are available as single and double rod models in three lengths. They are available for stone and aluminum window sills. The system is very simple: a stainless steel rod is inserted into two brackets with a rod holder so that flower boxes or larger pots are secured against slipping down. The brackets are first slid under the window sill — much like a tablecloth clip — and then screwed to the rod holders. The required material is included.

Flower box holder without drilling

  • Secure hold for your plants on the windowsill
  • Easy opening and closing of the window possible
  • Easy installation: no drilling or screws thanks to clamping hooks
  • Suitable for fold widths of approx. 15 — 21 mm
  • Durable: made of weather-resistant aluminum and die-cast

Planters with water reservoir for French balconies, balustrades and bar railings or bar railings with vertical struts

Planters with 4 l water reservoir made of fully recyclable plastic (PP) for balustrades and railings or railings with vertical struts, e.g. French balconies. These can easily be slid between the struts of the balcony railing, as conventional flower boxes do not fit everywhere.

rephorm windowgreen

With the windowgreen window sill flower box from rephorm, no drilling is required to install the box. securely fastened. Instead, two stainless steel adjusting screws with supple rubber sliders are used to clamp the box securely in the window opening. Thanks to the variability of the adjusting screws, the window dimensions can vary between 92 cm and 132 cm. It is made of frost-resistant, recyclable plastic (PE) with 3 mm wall thickness. The drainage holes prevent overwatering, but can also be closed if required.

Balcony box with water reservoir

Balcony boxes with water reservoirs also prove their worth for windowsill gardening, so that less watering is required. This stable, relatively wide and tall variant “Alpfa Aqua Perfect” made of plasticizer-free polypropylene, measuring L 100 x W 22.5 x H 18 cm, has an integrated drain function. Also available in 80 cm and 60 cm, as well as in white and anthracite. 80 and 100 cm with stiffening strut. Made in Germany. The capacity for soil is approx. 25 liters for the 100 cm version.

Book recommendation “Window sill garden” by Deike Haßler

This book was awarded 3rd place “Best Guidebook” on March 8, 2024 at the German Garden Book Prize 2024: Deike Haßler from Küstenbalkon speaks at the 14th Online Organic Balcony Congress “Every meter counts! My ingenious organic balcony” about windowsill gardening and presents her book.

If necessary, clarify in advance whether installation on the outside window sill is (technically) unobjectionable (e.g. landlord, thermal insulation, etc.). A look at the house rules or the rental agreement often helps. If you want to be on the safe side, talk to your landlord. When arguing your case, make sure that the planters are adequately secured against falling and that the fabric of the house is not damaged.

I went for the Tietz. I didn’t find it easy to fit, but the quality is great, super sturdy and it looks timelessly good/neutral.

Thank you for highlighting such practical aspects on your homepage and for providing links where you can look at examples! This made it so much easier for me to take concrete action. I no longer had to spend hours researching everything, but was able to concentrate on the choice of plants. As a beginner, EVERYTHING is new. I had virtually no outdoor plants before. And now, in my second year, I have just over 50 planters ranging from balcony boxes to 50 cm cubes. From chives to willows and globe thistles, wild teasel, motherwort, chicory, tomatoes, lettuces, cornflowers, viper’s bugloss and the inevitable bluebells.

And the most recent new additions are 8 balcony boxes with roofroots, grasses and carnations. They are basically my alternative to Mudguards — I simply moved the bird’s bum a little further outwards 😉

Insects support ecological gardening in small spaces (balcony, terrace, windowsill, allotment).
