Patricia Bobak presents her wild, tiny north-facing balcony at the Online Organic Balcony Congress.

Patricia Bobak

My tiny wild north-facing balcony on 2.4 m² — from a wild idea to a natural paradise

In the heart of Hamburg, Patricia Bobak first turned a shady north-facing balcony into a vegetable garden in 2023, which was enriched with many native perennials and small structures such as a water trough, nesting aid and deadwood in 2024. Covering just 2.4 square meters, the balcony blooms from March into the summer, making it a model project for anyone who wants to plant a north-facing balcony. Between garlic rocket, purple loosestrife and red foxglove, the small balcony can just about be walked on, giving it a truly enchanted, wild character. Patricia documented the development for the „Deutschland summt“ 2024 planting competition and won 2nd place in the „Balconies, terraces, roof gardens, vertical gardens“ category. The topic of nature and sustainability is also close to her heart professionally, as she works as a freelance copywriter in the field of sustainability, among other things. On her blog „Nordbalkonliebe“, she regularly writes about her north-facing balcony and gives practical tips on gardening in the shade in the smallest of spaces.

Presentation content:

Patricia uses beautiful photos to show the development of her tiny north-facing balcony and gives good tips to inspire people to green even supposedly difficult north-facing areas and make them bloom. Even in her first year, she had amazing and charming animal visitors thanks to the use of mainly native plants. Here you can get good tips on planning, structures, favorite plants and combinations for locations with poor light conditions, which are also possible on south, east and west-facing balconies. Unbelievable how quickly Patricia got her north-facing balcony to bloom! Unbelievable what animals came to visit! You will be amazed. Every meter counts!
