From meadow to garden. How a garden becomes a natural garden for additional care
Since 2022, Jennifer Richard and her husband Charlie have had a house with a large garden that is laid out and maintained in a natural way. They are constantly adding new living areas. They planted a flat roof with native plants, equipped it with insect nesting aids and water points and have now transformed the 30 m² into another place for birds and insects and have achieved a lot with their Green rooftop oasis 1st place in the “Deutschland summt!” planting competition in the balconies, terraces, roof gardens, vertical gardens category in 2024. Jennifer impresses as a doer because she is committed to hedgehogs with a hedgehog feeding station. She is also an inspector for the Thousand Gardens, Thousand Species project, which promotes native wild plants. On Instagram, Jennifer is known as native habitat together with four hedgehog charities, quickly organized an informative online Advent calendar about biodiversity. As is sometimes the case, the whole thing ended up being bigger than expected. They wanted to show ways to support the 1TP5 animal of the year, the hedgehog, and they succeeded.

Jennifer presents the redesign of her garden and hopefully encourages people to get involved. It is becoming increasingly clear and well-known how important green roofs and house walls are for improving the microclimate and binding particulate matter. The project shows how a previously unplanted flat roof can be transformed into an enchanted paradise with a lot of passion and commitment. Jennifer and Charlie have transformed the garden, including the roof, into a suitable place for birds and insects with native plants, nesting aids and numerous water points.
