Balcony expert Birgit Schattling, Organic Balcony Congress

Every flower, every meter counts to promote biodiversity, urban nature, self-sufficiency and being naturally connected!

My organic balcony project for organic gardening in a small space with two GuidebooksOnline Organic Balcony Congress, Balcony coursesLectures and Presence balcony school in Berlin is an invitation for much more green, blooming, diverse Feel-good places for humans and animals with a pleasant microclimate and abundant harvests, especially in our cities. From my many years of experience as a Berlin balcony gardener inner-city balconies overheated by the extreme location (4 m² + 5 m² + 5 Window sills with 2 balcony boxes each) on the 6th floor in Berlin-City with Vertical cultivation24 bird species right here on the 6th floor, daily Squirrel visits, 5 x Squirrel offspring, founder of the organic balcony movement in 2017 and organizer of the so far 16 Online Organic Balcony Congresses I know very well how much is possible on the balconies and what great pleasure we get from every freshly harvested salad and Radish draw. My vision is that many more people will use their balconies and windowsills: designed close to nature as a place of well-being for people and animals and for self-sufficiency. Every meter counts!

My main focus:

  • Urban gardening, rich harvest, healthy and sustainable living in the city, permaculture
  • Sustainable gardening with nature, plant strengthening for healthy plant growth
  • Edible and insect-friendly wild plants, herbal knowledge, closeness to nature, magic
  • Back to nature, to natural life, to our true nature, to being connected

Great harvest on the balcony with tomatoes, Mexican mini cucumber and goji berries thanks to worm humus.

Worm humus — the best fertilizer for your balcony

Successful gardening involves fertilizing and strengthening plants as well as an active soil life, just like in nature. My favourite fertilizer for the balcony is worm composting in a worm bin. Open the lid and put the organic waste in.
