Artemisia annua has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over two thousand years. Artemisia annua — the annual Chinese mugwort — has an almost all-encompassing potential due to its ingredients. It is a great medicinal plant with huge potential for our health. What to look out for when growing the medicinal plant Chinese mugwort in the large You can read here about what to look out for in tubs on the balcony.
It is used as a remedy for malaria, Lyme disease, inflammation, cancer, AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, viral and bacterial diseases and much more.…..
Artemisia annua is a wonderful medicinal plant for the garden, balcony or even the windowsill.
As it has now been classified as a novel food, it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy the tea in shops.…..and the quality is often questionable.
Is the cultivation of Artemisia annua prohibited? No.
If you grow your own, you can make your own tea fresh or dried from the plant. You can also simply eat the leaves. 1–2 leaf stalks a day. I do this by popping two leaves into my mouth as I walk past on my daily inspection round, chewing them thoroughly and enjoying them. I have been spared from corona.
It is rich in ingredients to strengthen your immune system in the best possible way. Caution: NOT during pregnancy!
There are many ways to consume a medicinal plant.…..
Just like us Wild herbs can simply eat Artemisisa annua as part of their daily diet.
Fresh, raw and unprocessed.
This way you have all the ingredients your body needs to strengthen your immune system.
The ONE YEAR old mugwort contains: Iron, manganese, zinc, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, sulphur, boron, souls and zinc. The leaves are rich in protein, healthy fatty acids and carbohydrates. The leaves are rich in vitamins, especially vitamin E, fiber, antioxidants (it is one of the 4 plants with the highest potential worldwide), essential oils and bitter substances.

Plant out in a LARGE planter after the Ice Saints until the end of June, as they are not frost-hardy.
Seeds: How to get organic Artemisia annua seeds for the balcony
To ripen the seeds, leave the stems until they are brown, really brown, not still green. The seeds ripen very late, which can be as late as the end of November. Then carefully cut them off and place them upside down in a paper bag and hang it up. This will dry the seeds and some of them will fall out — directly into the bag. You could also keep them in the bag and tap them out next spring directly on the spot or over pots of soil for pre-cultivation. If you have space, simply leave the dried brown plant outside.….., one stem is enough, dry the other stems for tea. The young plants will then germinate in large numbers on the spot and can be transplanted later.
Sow indoors in preculture April/May. Direct sowing May/June. Light germinator! Only press the seeds down, do not cover with soil! Plant out in large Plant in a container after the Ice Saints until the end of June, as they are not frost hardy. Another gardener’s experience: It is really easy to sow. Simply scatter it on any soil from the end of January and cover it with a little soil, press on and keep it moist. That’s all there is to it. One month later you can already separate the seedlings.

I practiced it in such a way that I cut off the plant after flowering at the end of August, cut it into rough pieces and dried it. I drank this tea over the winter and was spared. I left one stalk standing so that the seeds could ripen right outside on the plant. The seeds immediately sprouted outside by themselves. I had lots of small seedlings. As I didn’t water well for a while, the first batch of seedlings dried out. But in places where it wasn’t too dry, there are still some, or new seedlings have sprouted outside. I can even see some growing down on the street. So I save myself the trouble of pulling them indoors. I always love these self-seedings because the seeds choose where they want to germinate, where they like it. If it’s too crowded, I simply move them, as there are enough young plants thanks to the self-seeding.
If you don’t like sowing, then try propagation by cuttings
If sowing from a stem that has been left standing doesn’t work and you don’t want to sow, cuttings are a great option. Sometimes Artemisia annua does not flower and therefore does not self-seed. Then leave a medium-sized Artemisia in a pot indoors in a very bright place over the winter. Then take cuttings in February. To do this, cut off the ends of the branches (approx. 10 to 12 cm) and remove the green at the bottom of the branches. Place them in a container filled to the brim with water. After about 3 weeks, roots will form on the branches. When the roots are about 4 cm long, plant them individually in pots and let them continue to grow in a bright spot. When the frost is over in spring, they can be taken outside. This way you get new plants without having to sow them. These are also very nice to give as gifts.
Artemisia annua care
Artemisia annua is easy to care for. It is robust. It is important not to keep it too moist and to use a LARGE planter. It adapts its growth to the size of the container and the substrate. It can grow up to 2 meters tall in a planter on the balcony. A nutrient-rich substrate and a large container are required. If the soil is poor in nutrients and the pot is smaller, it will not grow as vigorously. It is an annual, but forms tiny little seeds from August or September onwards, which you can sow again yourself or leave to germinate on the balcony. It is a light germinator, just press the seeds down, do not cover them with soil. You can try to overwinter Artemisia annua indoors, but it is said to have less active ingredient in the second year.
Here is an experience report on growing from seed by Christina Dahms: Artemisia annua on my balcony
“In early spring I bought Artemisia Annua seeds from the Templin herb garden ordered and pre-grown at the window in March. Cultivation is a little tricky because the seed is as fine as powder and you really have to sow it very thinly. The sprouted seeds are nevertheless very dense and quickly intertwine. When the seedlings were about 5 cm high, I carefully separated them into very small pots. After the Ice Saints, I repotted them in larger pots and put 14 plants on the balcony. I couldn’t fit any more on my mini-balcony and unfortunately I don’t have a garden. You have to make sure that the plants don’t dry out, because if they are stressed by drought they start to flower. But then the artemisinin content drops. I have fertilized them from time to time with liquid universal fertilizer Vinalga (Snoek natural productsThere was a lecture on this at the last organic balcony congress). I haven’t had any stress with pests, they don’t seem to like the intense scent of the plant. The plant is harvested when the first flower buds appear, before the artemisinin content drops. I then cut off the plants and hung them upside down in the room to dry. I then stripped off the dried leaves and pulverized them in a blender. As my plants were very close together on the balcony in fairly small pots, they only grew to a height of around 1.50 m and didn’t spread out very much. The harvest of 14 plants then only amounted to a total of 50 g when dried
Conclusion from Christina Dahms: “If my balcony wasn’t so small, had a bit more sun and I had used larger pots, the plants would certainly have been more lush. They were very dense.”
Christina used this Video about growing from seed to tea.
My experience report: My first Artemisia annua plant on my organic balcony
I myself have had an Artemisia plant in the new Vertical bed. See how it has grown. In 5 weeks. It’s unbelievable how everything is growing, it’s virtually exploding. Whenever I walk past the bed, I put two leaves in my mouth. I chew them very slowly and know that I’m doing something very good for my body, for myself.
Once again, the influence of large planters and light is very clear
Online Congress Medicine of the Earth 4: Artemisia annua “Plant of Hope” — the recording is available
The online congress on this plant was held in September 2022: Artemisia annua — plant of hope. The experienced herbalist and congress organizer Christel Ströbel organized it and imparts a great deal of knowledge, experience and hope. In China, Atemisia annua has been used successfully for 2000 years against malaria, parasites, bacteria, viruses and fungi and to stabilize the immune system. The latest studies now indicate that Artemisia annua also has promising effects against diabetes, cancer and many other diseases.
- Could it be that the whole plant is much stronger than isolated active ingredients?
- Why does the WHO only support drugs with isolated artemisinin?
- Why is the plant subject to the Novelfood Regulation?
- Could it strengthen your immune system during the coronavirus pandemic?
There is also an interview with Klaus Umbachwhat to look out for when growing them.
Book recommendation
I can recommend this book by Barbara Simonsohn. In the online congress Medicine of the earth herbalist Christel Ströbel interviewed Barbara Simonsohn. She has undertaken intensive research on Artemisia annua worldwide. How a plant in its entirety, by drinking the tea, could save millions of people is information that has not been wanted for decades. This applies particularly to malaria, but also to many other diseases, such as AIDS, glandular fever, Ebola and viral diseases of all kinds.

…then I’ll trust my fairy godmother. Get a move on, old girl!
I would also like to grow my own plants on the terrace in a raised bed and would be delighted to win Artemedis annua,
I would be very happy about an Artemisia annua plant… ❤❤❤❤
Dear Nicole, if you are drawn by my lucky fairy Paul, you will even get three little plants :). I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Best wishes Birgit
Hello dear Birgit, I hope it’s okay that I’ve also signed up for the chilies, in case Paul doesn’t pull me with the Artemisia plants and I have more luck there? 😉❤ At this point I would like to thank you again for your super great conferences!!!! They have already inspired me a lot and things are really happening on my balcony 😆😆
Dear Nicole, of course, entries for all three plant species are fine. Just please from Germany, that’s what the donor Klaus Umbach asked me to do. I understand that too. And I think there really should be enough space on the balcony for the plants to thrive. But somehow we always find a place :). Have a nice weekend for you and everyone Birgit
I don’t live that far away from Klaus Umbach 😉 and I have space too 😊 Thank you, have a nice, sunny weekend too, dear Birgit 🙏❤
Is it still possible to buy?
Yes
A great plant whose leaves have a wonderful aroma, unique. I would be delighted to receive a little plant. Kind regards
I would also like to have an Artemisia plant on my balcony. I’ve already ordered the seeds from Kräuter Urban and am waiting for delivery, but a young plant is even better so I can harvest this year 🤩
Dear Laila, please send your address to news@bio-balkon.de with the keyword “Artemisia annua Gärtnerei Umbach”, so that I can forward your address to the Bioland Gärtnerei Umbach for shipping the three generously donated Artemisia annua plants in the best Bioland quality. May they feel at home with you and bring you well-being. Kind regards Birgit and lucky fairy Paul
I only know mugwort for (home) incense. That’s why I would also be very interested in the “other side”. I’ve never tried it as a tea.
That all sounds interesting.…will certainly order…Grandpa and I are already working on it.…have a nice weekend
I would be very happy to receive plants from the raffle.
Sincerely
Karen
Oh yes, I would also like a young plant, I’m a beginner when it comes to medicinal plants 😉
oh wow, great!
I hadn’t heard of this plant before and strengthening the immune system sounds great. I would love to try it out on my balcony and would be very happy to receive a young plant, especially as pre-germination is always a bit difficult for me…
Thank you very much!
Dear Birgit,
I am so amazed at this medicinal herb and where it can bring or support healing everywhere, or its ingredients:
Iron, manganese, zinc, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, sulphur, boron, selenium and zinc. The leaves contain protein, healthy fatty acids and carbohydrates. Vitamins, especially vitamin E, fiber, antioxidants, essential oils and bitter substances.
Wow😯
That’s what nature offers us… what more could you want? 😊
It seems so worthwhile to deal with our herbs and medicinal plants. I would love to welcome these incredibly versatile plants to my balcony. 🤩😍
Many thanks to you and your knowledgeable interlocutors and especially to Klaus Umbach for making these wonderful plants available for the raffle.
A nice weekend with finally more sunshine will do us and the plants and nature good.
Kind regards
Tonya
I am also interested in this plant because of my Lyme disease. Is it true that these are cold germinators, so you should put them in the fridge to germinate?
I can’t confirm that. They are light germinators, so do not cover them with soil after sowing. They do not need to be put in the fridge. Kind regards Birgit
Thank you for the information. Can’t you hatch the duck eggs yourself?
Hello dear Birgit and dear lucky fairy Paul
Artemisia Annua is a medicinal plant that helps with malaria and kills viruses and bacteria.
It is so interesting for me because I have a self-help project in Kenya and we are always struggling with malaria and bacterial diseases there. Unfortunately, the old healing knowledge is increasingly being lost there and pharmaceuticals are gaining the upper hand. It would be a great opportunity to first test the plants here in my garden at home and then introduce them to our project on my next visit to Kenya, hopefully soon.
All the best and love
Best regards
Andrea
Dear Andrea,
You probably know it, but when I read your comment I thought of Dr. Martin Hirt, who is very familiar with such projects.
Good luck with your project ingrid

I would like to send them to my mother. She has just moved house and hasn’t had the opportunity to plant her balcony due to the whole situation. The little plants would be a great start 🍀 🍀🍀
Hello!
I would like to take part in the competition. I’ve ordered from the Artemisia nursery before and they are really great, beautiful plants.
I also have Barbara Simonsohn’s book and have already read it — highly recommended!
I am from Austria and if I win, I would pay the shipping costs and buy the remaining Artemisia plants so that the package is well utilized.
I am very enthusiastic about this nursery! Too bad I haven’t found a suitable one in Austria yet.
Regards, Doris D.
I would be very happy about the little plants — I already had 2 from the Umbach nursery last year, but unfortunately didn’t get them through the winter.
I’d also like to jump into the lottery pot, maybe the medicinal plant Artemisia annua will bring my immune system back into balance. I haven’t yet been able to use it as a tea either.
I have a booklet about Artemisia Annua, but no plant yet. I would be very happy about an addition to my balcony 😁
Thank you for the valuable information. It’s nice to know that Artemesia can also be grown on the balcony. And important to know that its active ingredient potential diminishes under certain circumstances.
I would also be delighted to win one.
Kind regards Jutta
Dear Birgit, dear Paul,
This plant is a blessing and I would be delighted to be one of the winners. Unfortunately, I had no luck with the sowing. It doesn’t seem to be that easy. In terms of health, I’m sure we could all use this plant of the gods right now. Thank you for providing information about the beautiful hobby of gardening with so much commitment. LG
I started to expand my organic balcony this month and would be very happy about more interesting plants/medicinal herbs 🙂

I only recently found out about mugwort. An incredible plant!
I would be delighted 😉!
Hello dear Birgit, I would be delighted with the little plants. I tried to get my great Artemisia through the winter but unfortunately it froze to death😔 So please put in a good word for me with Paul. Best wishes Rebecca
thanks for the great suggestions and tips, i’m totally thrilled,
Thank you very much for your generosity.
Our creator has really come up with something special with this plant.
If she is to come to me, Paul will confirm this.
Otherwise, I wish everyone who receives it many blessings.
Dear Birgit, I would be very happy about such an Artemisia, unfortunately it didn’t work out with the seeds the other day😒. Your webinars are always great and interesting, I have a small garden and was able to transfer many ideas from the balcony to a small garden and implement them👍The center there is a herb bed that smells and hums and tastes😃
Kind regards, Jojo🌼
You always learn nice, useful things.
I would be delighted if Paul’s hands would pull me. And I can grow the plants.
Kind regards Suse
oh, I would love to try it, I’ll try my luck 🙂
Jeah, as an HP I know the effects of Artemesia and would love to see it growing on my balcony 😎

Very interesting article. I have been ordering Artemissia Annua plants from the Umbach nursery since last year and have now planted a plant in the garden for the first time, as well as a goji plant. I eat 2–3 leaves a day. And I have also smoked the house with the dry leaves.
Of course I would also be very happy to win if Lady Luck is kind to me.
Dear Birgit,
What I have learned so far about Artemisia annua is so wonderful that I would be very happy to get such a plant!
Best regards
Angelica
I would be delighted to win a little plant. I already have a good place for it.
I would be very happy about the Artemisia annua.
I recently saw the movie “The Fever”, in which this plant is used to cure malaria.
This film shocks and enlightens.

I started planting radishes and lettuce on my balcony this spring
and would be very happy to receive plants from the raffle.😊
This year I too (educator, forest teacher, nature teacher, prospective herbal teacher with seminars in herbal and tree healing) stumbled across the possibilities of ARTEMISIA ANNUA and have made my first attempts with it…
I would therefore be delighted if these could be expanded with additional plants :-))

Many thanks for the great and very useful information.
I would like to grow the medicinal plant Artemisia annua on my balcony. I saw a video on how it is used against malaria, very interesting and recommended. It is very healthy for many things.
After watching the video, I thought that I should take care of a plant like this.
I wanted to research this and now the information comes to me “by chance”. Thank you very much.
It’s great that you can grow them here and even on the balcony. It’s very useful and very healthy.
Do you have an article on the Templin herb garden, possibly in a congress? As I was born in the area, I’m interested.
So far I haven’t made any contact there. There are a lot of good nurseries, but they always catch my eye. Let’s see. Kind regards Birgit
Dear Birgit + dear messenger of happiness Paul,
I would also love to win an Artemisia plant.
Last year I had 2 little plants that had started so wonderfully + even in their smallness had a wonderful splendor + strength.
Unfortunately, these did not survive the sudden onset of winter in NRW — still sad not to have taken better care of them.
This plant is very, very good for me + I would love to have it back on my balcony as a fresh plant -
Dear Birgit — thank you for your continued commitment + thanks to Paul for your support — your “going along” !!!!
Dear Lady Luck,
I would be very happy about the Artemisia annua.
Due to my sister’s cancer, we have both become real wild herb witches;-) and she only recently told me that I urgently needed an Artemisia annua on my small city balcony. So this great medicinal plant is at the top of my list.
Dear Ute, please send your address to news@bio-balkon.de with the keyword “Artemisia annua Gärtnerei Umbach Heilbronn”, so that I can forward your address to the Bioland Gärtnerei Umbach for shipping the three generously donated Artemisia annua plants in the best Bioland quality. Sunny greetings 🌞
I can already tell where I would plant them. Thank you very much for this opportunity.
Um, hopefully it’s okay that I’ve also thrown myself into the lottery pot for the chilies.
Dear Birgit,
I would also be over the moon to win the Artemisia Annuas.
In my mind’s eye, I can see the little plants filling the gap here, growing and flourishing.
I hope for my luck in the drawing by your lucky fairy son Paul.
Best wishes to you in Berlin,
Kathrin from the north of Hamburg
Then I’ll try my luck. I didn’t even know that you could grow this great plant on the balcony.
Best regards
I’ve heard a lot about this miracle plant Artemisia annua recently. It’s still missing from my herb collection!

Sounds interesting
Dear Birgit,
I would love to win this great plant. I had it on my terrace last year — the tea is very aromatic!
Dear Birgit,
My organic balcony would be delighted with the new addition of an Artemisia annua … and so would I, of course.
Greetings from Lower Franconia
With pleasure!
Dear Birgit,
I have been an enthusiastic viewer of your congresses from the very beginning. I have already been able to use many good tips for my balcony. I will definitely create a place for the Artemisia.
Best regards, Christine
Hello dear Birgit,
I work in a pharmacy specializing in naturopathy and TCM. We recommend Artemisia annua, especially in these pandemic times, due to its many good health-promoting effects, including its antiviral properties against the coronavirus.
Having our own plant would of course be the icing on the cake, as we only have it available in dried form.
I would be delighted with the prize.
Best wishes and Servus. Your Christiane.

I ordered the Artemisia Annua plant from Umbach last fall. After Christel Strobel’s herbal congress. I was surprised that the plant tastes much less bitter when fresh. A little peppery. Almost delicious. I would be delighted to win a shipment of this great medicinal plant. Greetings to Berlin 🙂
Hello Birgit,
Thank you for your enthusiastic commitment to Biobalkone!
Yes, and my herb balcony would be very happy about an increase in mugwort,
as it is no longer so easy to get hold of this herb and I would like to see its effect on the body for myself.
Kind regards
Annette
I would have enough space in my new garden to plant these treasures. I also have a large south-facing balcony now that I’ve moved. Looking forward to any further organic balcony tips from you.
‘Mugwort in medicine is such a wonderful plant. It would be nice to have it in the garden.
Dear Birgit,
I have wanted an Artemisia annua plant for a long time. It would be nice to win one.
Thank you for your helpful work and all the information.

Dear Birgit and dear lucky fairy Paul ;-),
I have been working on making healing tinctures from wild herbs and medicinal plants for a long time. I have wanted to make a tincture from Artemisia Annua for a long time.
I would be very happy if I had the opportunity to lovingly grow the little plants and then harvest a few leaves for making remedies.
Healing greetings,
Rita
I am very enthusiastic about everything you do and how you manage to get people involved
Of course I would also be delighted to win!!!
I can only agree with Henrike’s contribution. Wonderful commitment.
I bought an Artemesia tea last year but would much rather grow it myself alongside my other wild herbs.
Best regards
Ann
Thanks for the information about Artemisia. Many more people should grow and harvest it themselves.
What a great campaign! I would be so happy to win 🙂 And I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your great work, your infectious enthusiasm and the really diverse and enjoyable congresses to attend!
Dear Birgit, I find your homepage and your work very enriching. Our balcony is starting to come to life, lettuce is sprouting… We would be very happy to have such a wonderful medicinal plant as Artemisia annua.
A lot of strength, joy…
Sincerely, Christine

I would love to win this brilliant plant! That would make me very happy!
The plant is great :) I would be very happy to have it on my balcony! Thank you dear Brigit for the great opportunity to take part in such a raffle.
Best regards
Luzie
You have to scroll for a long time to get on this list! But I also want to try my luck. Maybe the Artemisia will work out!
Dear Birgit,
I know the perennial mugwort well — I would be very pleased to grow the annual mugwort in comparison.
Best regards, Angelika
There is still a little space in my herb tower and I would be very happy to have an “Artemisia annua”. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for myself (and everyone else too, of course).
Best wishes and have a great Sunday, Isabella 🙂
I really must try the Artemisia this year!
Many thanks to BIOLAND-Gärtnerei Umbach for the donation for the raffle.
In addition to a hot summer south-facing conservatory, this year I’m going to try my hand at window sill gardening (8th floor, north side).
Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to try out Artemisia annua and have two opportunities to observe its growth under different conditions. So many thanks to Christina Dahms for her report, it will be very helpful.
Best wishes and many thanks also to Birgit Schattling and her son Paul with the “lucky hands” of
Andrea
Dear Andrea, please send your address to news@bio-balkon.de with the keyword “Artemisia annua Gärtnerei Umbach Heilbronn”, so that I can forward your address to the Bioland Gärtnerei Umbach for shipping the three generously donated Artemisia annua plants in the best Bioland quality. May they feel at home with you and bring you well-being. Kind regards Birgit and lucky fairy Paul
Dear Birgit,
the plant sounds simply WOW, I would love to be part of it. It would fit perfectly in the insect-friendly medicinal herb balcony, where sage, rosemary, chives, raspberries and blackberries are already in bloom.
Best regards
Andreas
Wow, a fascinating plant, thanks for all the information.
Maybe luck is with me, I would be very happy about the plants.
Best regards
Dear Birgit, thank you very much for the great information. Inspired by your congress this year, I have started sowing and planting lettuce, radishes and medicinal herbs on my balcony. The annual mugwort sounds so fascinating to me that I would be delighted to have a plant!!!
Kind regards
Christiane
I didn’t know Artemisa at all. Very interesting. So I can get healthy vitamins in a completely natural way. Many thanks for all the information — it would be nice to be lucky and win a plant. All three are great — Goji, Chilli or Artemisa
Hello everyone, I would also be happy to receive an artemisia, it sounds very interesting and I have some of the problems mentioned. LG Beatrice
Dear Birgit,
Your Organic Balcony Congress was again so rich in beautiful ideas and suggestions that I have implemented some of them on my very large balcony. I would love to win 3 Artemisia Annua and add them to my balcony.
Best regards Jutta
Dear Birgit Schattling, I would be very happy to receive a plant package of Artemisia anua, I had 3 plants 2 years ago that grew very well in summer.
sowing artemisia annua is very tricky in the day. i have not managed to get my seedlings through. that’s why i would be very happy about young plants! best regards,. dora
How do you do?
Do you know where I can buy Artemisia Annua seeds in Berlin?
Thank you very much in advance,
Yan
Dear Yann, I don’t know. I can give seeds next winter because I now also have a plant. From July 23rd there will be a whole online congress about this plant: Artemisia annua — plant of hope https://bit.ly/3hXl0W5. Christel Ströbel organizes it. Listen to it, it will impart so much knowledge. Kind regards Birgit
Hello,
Last year I bought Artemesia Annua seeds (from Chillifee) and sowed each seed the size of a speck of dust individually in seed pots. After successful cultivation, I planted them in larger pots (as I now know, but not large enough), harvested them and almost forgot about them when they flowered. Then I quickly saved the already dry seeds before the first frost. This spring I sowed them again and not only did new real Artemesia Annua grow from the seed pots, but also everywhere where some seeds obviously didn’t end up in the bag when I harvested them in late fall, which means that the seeds even survived the cold winter.
So I can only confirm what was often said in the balcony congress: Just try it out and don’t be discouraged;-)
Dear Gabi, thank you for sharing your experiences. Large planters are the basis for successful gardening. We can refer to this again and again. Just try it out and don’t get discouraged ;-). Thank you. Have fun with your Artemisia annua plantation. Kind regards Birgit
Super, I’ll try that too. What else can I do with the plant? Ointments, tinctures, tea?
Dear Frauke, yes, the full range. From 23.07. there will be a whole online congress on this plant: Artemisia annua — plant of hope https://bit.ly/3hXl0W5. Christel Ströbel organizes it. Listen to it, there is so much knowledge to be gained. Kind regards Birgit
Dear Christina,
Thanks for the valuable information!
I have one small correction. You write:
“It is not worth allowing a plant to flower in order to remove the seed. This is because the seed supposedly only produces the common mugwort with much less active ingredient. Annual mugwort is grown from hybrid seeds. ”
We have been propagating Artemisia annua by seed for several years now. From a purely botanical point of view, they cannot suddenly turn into Artemisia vulgaris, the common mugwort. It is also not like mint, where many varieties are created from crosses of naturally occurring species — and which can then only be propagated via offshoots. And artificial hybrid breeding has fortunately not yet penetrated the field of herbs. I can therefore highly recommend trying it out with your own seeds.
Best regards
Matthias
Thank you dear Matthias, you are absolutely right. It is a collection of experiences. I have a lot of self-seeded young plants that grow right outside in the planters. If it’s too cramped, I simply move them, there are enough young plants available. Kind regards Birgit
I have harvested a lot of seeds and have now sown a small portion. They are developing well and I think they will be wonderful Artemisia Annua plants. But they are still too small to identify.
Dear Frauke from the north! They will be wonderful plants, because the starting material from the Umbach nursery is excellent. I left one stalk in the fall, dried the other stalks and drank them as tea over the winter and was spared any disease. The seeds have planted themselves right outside. I always find these self-seedings great, because the seeds choose the places where they want to germinate, where they like it. Kind regards Birgit
Hello everyone,
I have received small plants approx. 2–4 cm in size.
Can anyone help me?
I only have a small balcony:
Can I put the plants in a normal medium-sized flower pot? I was thinking 4 in a flower pot. When they get bigger then move them again …
Can I use normal potting soil for this? Does it have to be mixed with sand?
And do they need regular fertilizer?
Many thanks in advance.
Kind regards Barbara
Dear Barbara! Take the largest pot that fits and that you have. The bigger the pot, the more light, the more nutrient-rich the soil, the bigger your plants will grow and the more you can harvest. I wouldn’t mix in sand, the more nutrient-rich the soil, the bigger your plants will grow. Potting soil can contain harmful substances, it is designed for flowers, not for growing food. Kind regards Birgit
Good morning Birgit,
Thank you very much.
One more question: Where can I get nutrient-rich soil?
Can I get these at Bioland Umbach in Heilbronn?
Thank you in advance and have a great day.
Kind regards
Barbara
Dear Barbara, I think so. If you live near there, you can easily ask. I know that their soil is excellent for plants. But I’m not sure if they sell it. Otherwise, peat-free organic vegetable soil from the DIY store/garden center. Kind regards Birgit
Hello Birgit,
Thank you very much. I’ll have a look around there. Although her yard is closed. And you until
At lunchtime (because of the heat) sell at sales stands (Edeka).
Many greetings to you
Barbara
I was looking for tips on goji and found this informative site. How grateful I am for it.
That makes me happy. Mine have already sprouted again and will be flowering soon. Kind regards Birgit
