This year I wan\u00adted to try gro\u00adwing pota\u00adtoes on my orga\u00adnic bal\u00adc\u00ado\u00adny for the first time. In May, I plan\u00adted six pota\u00adtoes, pre-ger\u00admi\u00adna\u00adted seed pota\u00adtoes that I bought from the Dom\u00e4\u00adne Dah\u00adlem farm store in Ber\u00adlin. I was par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly exci\u00adted about the \u201cBlau\u00ader Schwe\u00adde\u201d varie\u00adty becau\u00adse the sprouts of this pota\u00adto alre\u00ada\u00addy had such an inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00ading pur\u00adple-blue color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I put the two seed pota\u00adtoes of the \u201cLin\u00adda\u201d varie\u00adty in an emp\u00adty soil bag from the pre\u00advious year, the \u201cBam\u00adber\u00adger H\u00f6rn\u00adchen\u201d varie\u00adty also went into an emp\u00adty soil bag and the two \u201cBlau\u00ader Schwe\u00adde\u201d seed pota\u00adtoes went into a huge flower pot that I pul\u00adled out of the gar\u00adba\u00adge. I did\u00adn\u2019t under\u00adstand why this beau\u00adtiful flower pot should be thrown away, so I res\u00adcued it from the gar\u00adba\u00adge and used it straight away for the pota\u00adto gro\u00adwing expe\u00adri\u00adment. The dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adta\u00adge was that this lar\u00adge pot stood right in my walk\u00adway on the nar\u00adrow, elon\u00adga\u00adted snack bal\u00adc\u00ado\u00adny and I always had to climb over it and the two sacks when I went to water it. I clim\u00adbed over it again and again that sum\u00admer, it was an extra fit\u00adness ses\u00adsi\u00adon. When the plants were big\u00adger, they tick\u00adled my legs when I clim\u00adbed over them in my sum\u00admer skirt. I con\u00adtin\u00adued adding soil until the pot was full or the soil bags were half full. Now the folia\u00adge was gro\u00adwing and the tubers were gro\u00adwing into the moun\u00added soil.
At the begin\u00adning of Sep\u00adtem\u00adber, the folia\u00adge beg\u00adins to wither. When they have withe\u00adred com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly, the pota\u00adtoes are ful\u00adly grown and har\u00adve\u00ads\u00adt\u00ading can begin. We invi\u00adted my son\u2019s fri\u00adend over to har\u00adve\u00adst the pota\u00adtoes \u2014 har\u00adve\u00ads\u00adt\u00ading tog\u00ade\u00adther is sim\u00adply even bet\u00adter. I\u2019ll try again next year. Why were the\u00adre so few and so small pota\u00adtoes? That\u2019s open to spe\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon. Were the soil bags too dark on the out\u00adside, did the soil in the bag get too hot? Pota\u00adtoes tole\u00adra\u00adte sun well, but the soil must not get too hot. Would a semi-shaded loca\u00adti\u00adon be bet\u00adter? Have I wate\u00adred too much? Was the soil in the bag too moist? Did I make too few holes in the soil bag so that it was too wet for the plants? The important thing is that we had a lot of fun. It was nice to watch the plants grow, the har\u00adve\u00adst was a gre\u00adat event, dig\u00adging and sear\u00adching in the soil, the tiny plants tas\u00adted gre\u00adat. Next year I will con\u00adti\u00adnue to gather expe\u00adri\u00adence with gro\u00adwing pota\u00adtoes on the orga\u00adnic bal\u00adc\u00ado\u00adny.
