Hoverflies on the balcony: pollinators, aphid hunters, survival artists

Since 1997, Christiane Denzel, a trained gardener and landscape gardener, has been the owner of the Bioland nursery and natural food Breite Wies‘, 20 km above Lake Constance in Emmingen-Liptingen. Through her vegetable nursery, the topic of „pollinating insects“ is close to her heart and she has been offering lectures and workshops on this subject for many years, as well as providing advice on biodiversity. As a trained naturopath, herbalist and farm educator, she inspires adults as well as children and young people and also imparts knowledge vividly through numerous books. She is also the 1st chairwoman of the „Bauerngarten und Wildkräuterland Baden“ association. She spends two days a week in schools teaching about biodiversity. She draws on over 20 years of experience with school classes and kindergarten groups as well as seasonal courses in her nursery, meadows and forests. In 2024, she began training biodiversity educators at two „state universities“ in Baden-Württemberg. The next Specialist seminar on biodiversity education will start in January 2027.

Lecture content:

Honey bees, bumble bees and other wild bees are wonderful and invaluable: together they take care of almost 50 % of flower pollination.
But who actually does the rest?

Flies, beetles and butterflies share the remaining 50 % — a fascinating variety that you could actually talk about for hours.
Hoverflies are a particularly important, but often underestimated group.

As true flying acrobats, they often hover in the air, change direction at lightning speed and need plenty of energy to do so.
This is precisely why they are among the most effective pollinators of all — something that many people are not even aware of. Also, that hoverflies are responsible for a large part of the pollination of a group of native „superfoods“!

But hoverflies can do much more: the larvae of many species consume large quantities of aphids, others clean stagnant water or carry out clean-up work in cowsheds.
And what do hoverflies actually do in winter? Let us surprise you!

Immerse yourself in the amazing world of hoverflies together with the biodiversity educator — right on our doorstep and on our own balcony.

You can look forward to it!
